Fall 2010
"The Essential Work of Being Healthy and Happy"
with Yi Ren® Health Qigong Practice
With Guan-Cheng Sun, Ph.D.
(Completion of Level 2 required)
Why are people unhappy? Perhaps it is because their expectations were inappropriate or mistaken in the first place, and their ideas of happiness are delusional, not based on reality. Or perhaps it is because people's lives are often run by pre-conditioned unhappy memories at the level of the internal organs without individuals being aware of them.
In the view of internal cultivation, happiness or unhappiness are significantly related to the energetic functions of the liver (expectations and disappointment), pancreas (intent, balance, and harmony), and kidneys (fear and free-will). Is it possible to adjust the unrealistic expectations and/or to renew and refresh the pre-conditioned memories? Yes. An important aspect of a successful internal cultivation process is the release and transformation of unhealthy memories in order to create a greater sense of health and well being.
In this upcoming Yi Ren® Qigong Practitioner Retreat, The Essential Work of Being Healthy and Happy, our focus will be on the energetic functions of the liver, pancreas and kidneys as well as their relationships within the body. Our energetic practice can help us to gain experiential understanding of the meanings of expectation and disappointment at the "software" level, to recognize the problems of fears and the power of free will, as well as to realize the informational functions of the intent during energetic communications and interactions.
Once practitioners recognize the functions of the preconditioned memories of the liver, pancreas and kidneys, and are able to upgrade their "software" in these internal organs, they will experience a sense of happiness that is a vast improvement from previous patterns. In this retreat we will offer specific liver, pancreas and kidney related Qigong practices for achieving greater freedom from disappointment and frustration, for overcoming fears, for using our intent wisely, and for using our free will appropriately for greater health and happiness.

Our focus in this Yi Ren® Qigong practitioner retreat will be on internal virtues cultivation and its relationship to consciousness. Our Qigong practice brings the Qi inward, into the deeper layers of the body and the body's consciousness; the Qi is the medium that brings the mind to the consciousness of the body and brings the consciousness of the body to the mind, allowing the mind and the consciousness of the body to communicate with each other. As the body holds up a mirror to the mind, reflecting whatever thoughts and emotions are around us and within us, our practice helps us to recognize and become aware of these thoughts and emotions.
Our virtues retreat series provides methods and tools for experiencing and recognizing the nature and the qualities of internal energies and their relationship to consciousness, which is the foundation of spiritual development in traditional teaching. In the internal cultivation tradition the establishment of virtue is understood to be not an ethereal or abstract, ideal state, but an embodied achievement, one which reflects the deep inner nature of the internal organs. And this embodiment of virtues—love, justice, appropriateness, wisdom, and loyalty—by the organs, nourishes and accelerates our spiritual development.
The practices in our virtues retreat series provide a unique opportunity to understand the essence of the ancient book, Dao De Jing (Tao Te Jing) — “The Way of Virtues” from the point of view of the internal cultivation tradition. In this Retreat we will offer practices and meditations based upon teaching in the Dao De Jing, helping us to understand this ancient and profound text in a new way—as a guide book for fuller growth and development through internal virtues cultivation.

In this half-day Yi Ren® Qigong Practitioner Retreat, our focus will be on ways of nourishing
the unity of Qi-Mind-Body-Spirit. We will cover some basics of spiritual self-protection, and
offer guidance on connecting to wholesome, clear, and beneficial sources of consciousness and
energy. The correct alignment of thought and mind, in combination with our energetic practice,
will enhance the possibilities for continued progress in the cultivation process.
Dr. Sun will offer Qigong practices and guidance on maintaining the center, and on aligning the
consciousness (and thus the energy); our intent is to focus the group energy on behalf of the
group itself and on each participant in order to create a healthy and positive 2007 for everyone,
and to extend this healthy and positive energy into the collective.
